Noise + Thirst
Video installation 2018
Noise + Thirst explores the complex intersection of Black masculinity through intimate video and sound compositions. The work centers on Black men's pivotal memories of first recognizing their hypervisibility - moments when they became acutely aware of how their Blackness and maleness shaped others' perceptions and their lived experiences. Through a layered collage of personal narratives, the installation weaves together childhood recollections, encounters with risk, and shared trauma, revealing Black masculinity as a space of inherent contradictions and imposed meanings.
The accompanying sound composition orchestrates voices, silence, and ambient noise to create an immersive sonic landscape that mirrors the tension between self-definition and external perception. This audio component moves between cacophony and quiet, desire and fulfillment, reflecting the multiplicity of Black male experience. The installation includes take-home zines that extend the conversation beyond the gallery space.
